1. “Spirit of South Mountain” at SMCC

For the past eight years, the SouthMountain/Laveen Chamber of Commerce has presented the “Spirit of South Mountain” awards, our premier annual gathering celebrating the best of our unique and appealing community. This past Thursday night, SMCC hosted this special event, and the proceedings had a distinctively Cougar flair—for starters, the SouthMountain Precinct Police Officer of the Year was a former SMCC student,Ernie Piña, who was honored for going above and beyond in capturing the perpetrator of a series of community assaults and burglaries last year.

Officer Ernie Piña (center) receives the South Mountain Precinct

Officer of the Year award.

And winning the Education Award this year was the SMCC Storytelling Institute, presented to institute director Liz Warren, pictured below with other SMCC attendees. More than 100 community members turned out for the affair, which once again celebrated South Mountain’s best of the best.

From left: Vice President of Learning Dr. Rey Rivera, Storytelling Faculty Marilyn Torres, Storytelling Institute Director Liz Warren, Vice President of Student Development Dr. Osaro Ighodaro (seated), College PresidentDr. Shari Olson, Business Faculty Bruce McHenry, and Vice President of Organizational Effectiveness & Technology Janet Ortega.

2. May 2 Awards, May 3 Lunch Wrap Up South Mountain Spring

And speaking of awards….hope your calendar is marked for this Thursday night, May 2, when SMCC presents its annual student and employee awards, starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Union. Mistress of ceremonies Lara Collins will oversee the proceedings, which will include an array of awards spotlighting student achievement, plus our new SMCC Pillar Awards, presented to three employees.

Don’t stay out too late, though, because the next morning, May 3, beginning at 9:30, we will be right back for our end-of-the-year College Luncheon and Celebration, featuring Years of Service awards, our Educational Lean teams, and a salute to our outgoing (and ultra-lovable) retirees. The program runs until 11 a.m., at which time lunch will be served, continuing until 1 p.m. Hope to see you all at both of these great events!

3. South Mountain “Diversity Awareness Days” Rock the Patio

If there’s anything that truly defines the SMCC campus, it’s diversity….not just ethnic and cultural, but diversity of opinions, ideas, philosophies, abilities….we are indeed a marvelous salad bowl of humanity. That’s why our annual “Diversity Awareness Days” has been such a great event for the past seven years. This year’s theme was“Using Critical Thinking Skills to Look Beyond What is in Front of You: Red Flags.” More than 100 students took part.

Under the leadership of Reading Faculty Asha Dey and the Student Life Office, the “DAD” of all spring events took place last Wednesday and Thursday, featuring student displays, community groups, and Dr. Garrison’s jazz band on hand to show off what we do best—a little bit of everything. Which, we suggest, is diversity defined.

4. Express Employment Supports Student Success

SMCC’s connections with area businesses are getting stronger and stronger, especially now with the development of our new Community Entrepreneurship Center. On April 17, one of those local businesses, Express Employment Professionals, owned and operated by Daria Buss (second from right), held a seminar at the Library, and also took the opportunity to present a $1,500 scholarship check to Donte Robinson (holding certificate), who was selected through a competitive application process. Congratulations, Donte!

5. SMCC Honors Honors at Spring Showcase

We always have oodles of events at the end of each semester—as this week’s MT-10 bears out—but without fail, the SMCC Honors Showcase is always among the best. Nancy Deegan’s Honors students will show off their spring research projects this Wednesday, May 1, in the Library Community Room. And even though these projects aren’t ALL fun and games, some of them are—you can try your hand at one of the board games created by our students, as well as experience their many other poster and PowerPoint presentations. It goes from noon to 2 p.m., and we’ll even feed you—get food for thought AND food for your gut—all for free!

6. SMCC Voice Blog Spotlights AAA115

If you recall Dr. Olson’s most recent newsletter, our new student orientation efforts are beginning to yield tangible, positive results in improving our retention and persistence rates. And a key component of our iStartSmart new student experience is our AAA115 class, “Creating College Success.” Adjunct Instructor Ahmad Daniels wrote up a recap of his experiences teaching this couse at SMCC, and shared it with us—you can now find it on our SMCC Voice blog….here:

http://smccvoice.southmountaincc.edu/index.php/creating-college-success-via-an-invaluable-aaa-115-experience/

7. Spring Student Recitals This Week

One of SMCC’s best kept secrets are our student music recitals. Come relax in the cool, aural splendor of the Performance Hall, and listen to what our music students have spent the semester mastering. Not only is it an enjoyable (and free!) musical experience, but it also gives them the chance to perform for a real audience—an important part of music performance. There are concerts Monday and Tuesday night at 7 p.m., Wednesday at 6 p.m., Thursday at noon, and Friday, again at 7 p.m. For a complete rundown of who all is playing, call our Performing Arts Hotline, x38353.

8. SMCC Summer Programs Still Recruiting

If you think everything at the Main Campus stops after Graduation, May10, you’ve got another thing coming.  Not only do our ACE and Upward Bound feeder programs continue on through the summer months, two of our most successful summer programs run throughout the month of June. OurMinority Male Summer Bridgeprogram—SMCC’s Innovation of the Year for 2013—enables Latino and African-American male high school seniors to take a four-credit math class and the aforementioned “Creating College Success” in five weeks, at no cost! You can get the details here:http://tinyurl.com/bo7w8m7.

And the SMCC BioScience Summer Camp has proven just as successful, providing a hands-on BioScience summer class (BIO107) to high school seniors who have graduated.

You can check out their flyer here: http://tinyurl.com/d5dfqy6. There’s still room in both sessions, so spread the word, and help those 2013 high school graduates that you know get a head-start on college.

9. ACE Takes on the Ivy League

South Mountain ACE doesn’t fool around when it comes to spring road trips—this year, they toured no less than nine east-coast Ivy League universities as part of a weeklong tour, March 29 to April 6, sponsored by the Arizona Ivy League Project. Among the stops were: Harvard, MIT, Wellesley University, Brown University, Wesleyan University, Yale University, Columbia University, Princeton University and University of Pennsylvania. They sent us a few postcards from their many stops…..

10. This Week’s SMCC Graduate Success Story

Here’s another SMCC Graduation success story, forwarded from Academic Advisor Deborah Spadafore, featuring 2013 graduate Rana Ali:

“My name is Rana Ali and I am at this time a junior at Arizona Cultural Academy and College Prep, which I joined two years ago. Currently, I have attained enough college credits to graduate this May with two associate’s degrees, and be only three classes away from my third. The graduation day, May 10, will be just five days after my sixteenth birthday.

“The combination of my hard work, my effort, the dual enrollment courses, and the opportunity provided by the ACE program helped me to achieve this goal at such a young age. I feel that I am a fortunate young lady with a bright future because I was able to grasp all of these opportunities and accomplish this much before even starting my senior year. I am extremely grateful that I was provided these opportunities and am even more grateful that I was able to accomplish this great feat. It goes to show that hard work and effort do pay off.”

1. It’s Award Season–Nominations Due!

As we edge closer and closer to semester’s end, it’s time to reflect back on all of the great things we accomplished this year, and there’s no better forum than SMCC’s year-end awards. First, take a few minutes to honor that student who set an example for others this year, and send in a nomination for the SMCC Student Awards. Then, submit the name of a South Mountain colleague for the inaugural SMCC Pillar Awards, to publicly reward those who exemplify Dr. Olson’s three pillars that support the vision and mission of the college:1) Creating a Learning Organization;2) Promoting and Integrating Student Success Strategies and Outcomes; and3) Creating a Culture of Innovation and Continuous Improvement

Links are below, and deadlines are FAST approaching..submit your nominations today!

2. Student Art On Display This Wednesday

If you’ve never dropped in on SMCC’s annual student art exhibition, we guarantee you will be impressed, if not amazed–our visual arts students, under the tutelage of Art Faculty Wiley Wallace and some gifted adjuncts, never fail to generate some beautiful and thought-provoking works. They’ll be on exhibit this Wednesday evening in the Library Community Room, with our opening reception running from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. And we even have one student who has been honored at the District level: Anna Clark’s ceramic piece entitled “Tooth Teapot” was selected for exhibition at the annual Maricopa “Artists of Promise” gala, this Tuesday night, April 16, at the Orpheum Theatre. Cougar Kudos to Anna!
3. Dr. Steve Fountaine Honored by DAC, Chair Academy

This has been a busy few weeks for Dr. Steve Fountaine.  On April 5, Steve enthralled an audience of 35 faculty and staff at a dialogue luncheon sponsored by SMCC Faculty and Staff Development.  He shared his recent trip to China with MCCCD in his presentation, China Delight: A Journey through the Senses.  The next night, April 6, Steve received the Chair Academy’s Idahlynn Karre International Exemplary Leader Award for 2013.  He was one of only nine recipients of this national award, which honors those nominated by their colleagues in recognition for exemplary leadership, best practices and commitment to their institutions, their departments and the students they serve. Finally, on April 10, Steve was recognized with the 2013 DAC Award of Excellence for his efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion at SMCC—the only individual in MCCCD to receive this award twice. We congratulate Dr. Fountaine for his continued commitment to excellence and steadfast dedication to our students!

4. SMCC Business Team Wins the Case!Have you noticed a theme running through this week’s MountainTop Ten? Yup, we’ve got more winners on campus. Business Faculty Bruce McHenry let us know that his team of four students from the SMCC Business Club won first place at the ACCE Business Case Competition recently held at the University of Arizona.  Student teams from six Arizona Community Colleges were given two hours to analyze a business case, create recommendations, and then make a seven-minute presentation to a panel of judges from the Eller College of Management.  South’s team of Armando ChavezAshwyn SanghaBetsy Marquez, and Roger Caneda were judged to have the overall best recommendations and presentation. Bruce commented that all the teams had good analysis and a strong presentation, but that the difference was in the SMCC team’s creativity and innovation in their recommendations.  South’s team receives a plaque to display at the college, and each team member is eligible for priority enrollment and a $2,000 scholarship to attend the Eller College at the University of Arizona.
5. And Yes, SMCC DOES Mean Business! In other business news, SMCC’s new Community Entrepreneurship Center has been reaching out this month to local small business owners and would-be entrepreneurs, to offer free personal strength assessments and a follow-up session designed to teach them how play to their strengths effectively and use them to create a successful business plan. Our first strength session for entrepreneurs is this Thursday, April 18 at 2:00, and there are still a few seats left–if you know someone who might benefit, have them call Bruce McHenry at602.305.5810 to join the party.
6. Mary Nunn Takes on Civic Engagement

Reading Faculty Mary Nunn may be new to South this year, but she’s already jumped into our college’s efforts in community wellbeing and engagement. Mary first played a key role in our presentation of the Anti-Defamation League’s hosting of “Training Rules”, the documentary film and discussion event covered in our last Top Ten.Now Mary will take over leadership of our President’s Community Advisory Council’s Civic Engagement focus team. Watch for more to come from this very active group of community and college members!
7. SMCC Presents Unnecessary Spring Production

So is South Mountain’s spring play REALLY an “Unnecessary Farce”? Doubt it….our spring productions are always VERY necessary. But you can find out yourself, when it opens in the PAC this Wednesday for a four-day, five-show run.You can get the showiness and get tickets online here, at the link below…and tell our students all they need to get in is a Maricopa ID and a smile.http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/351495

8. SMCC Deals ACE Students Winning Hand

We hear a lot about our ACE (Achieving a College Education) program here at SMCC, but we don’t always get a chance to see and hear what all they do.You’re going to get both this month, first with a first-person testimonial from one unnamed student, who’s been deeply affected by the program (link below), and then again on April 26 at 6:00 p.m., when the annual ACE Graduation Ceremony takes place in the PAC.Everyone’s invited, so drop in and get a sneak peek at SMCC’s students of tomorrow, today!http://bit.ly/15g0Jl4
9. Upward Bound Loves L.A. on Spring Field Trip

During Spring Break, SMCC Upward Bound took 26 students on a college tour to Los Angeles, California. Over three days, they visited Occidental College, Cal State LA, and the University of Southern California (USC).  At each of the colleges, the students got to see what each college had to offer, learning about the application process, housing options, and campus life. They also visited the Museum of Tolerance, heard stories of the Holocaust and discussed different topics regarding diversity and the world we live in.  All in all, it was a great educational and cultural experience the students will carry with them for the rest of their lives!

10. One SMCC Grad’s StorySMCC Academic Advisor Deborah Spadafore shared the inspirational story of one of our 2013 graduates with us this month. We know we have many more stories out there—if you know a student willing to share, send us the info, at south@southmountaincc.edu “My name is Levi Valenzuela, a proud upcoming graduate of South Mountain Community College. South Mountain was not my first choice in higher education; however, it may have been the most important. During high school I began losing interest in my capabilities as the years went on. I went from studying constantly to not even worrying about the fact I did not study for my midterm. My GPA sank below a 2.7, I was maintaining a few B’s but mostly C’s. The end of my senior year I realized I wanted much more out of my life. Physical therapy was always fascinating to me and I dreamed of helping others but at this point it was too late. No school would accept me in their medical programs and, even if they did let me in, I could not receive any scholarships.
South Mountain Community College was there for me. The classes were a perfect bridge from high school to a university education. Tough classes with deep one-on-one discussions with professors as well as many activities to build connections make South Mountain a magnificent place. Students and professors are extremely friendly and the honors classes were brilliant in building my thought process and how to better manage my studying. My current GPA is above a 3.6 and I have now been accepted into the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine for Physiology with a few thousand dollars in scholarships. South Mountain Community College was the strongest variable in my new success.”

1. Educational Lean Projects Take On The Big Issues

In a culture of continuous improvement, it takes a concerted effort to address the biggest topics….like how we schedule classes, or reinventing our student service model, or creating new ways to manage projects and control our workflow. Not the kind of stuff you can knock out over a quick lunch at Gallagher’s. That’s why more than four dozen SMCC faculty and staff members devoted many hours this spring to addressing these topics through a process new to South called “Educational Lean”. The progress we’ve made in these areas was presented and celebrated last Friday, led by guest facilitator Dr. Theresa Waterbury. The work is not yet complete, but you can get a look at what’s been done so far on our Leadership Council web page, here:

https://inside.southmountaincc.edu/leadership-council/.

We are making serious progress in taking South Mountain even higher!

2. Relay for Life Raises $11,000 to Fight Cancer

It wasn’t the kind of all-nighter you tend to associate with a college campus in late spring, but the results nonetheless inspiring–SMCC’s second annual Relay for Life all-night walkathon to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer was a huge success on both counts.

More than 160 SMCC students, employees and community members took part in the 12-hour event March 23 and 24, collecting pledges in excess of $11,000. Cougar Kudos to everyone involved in organizing this great event…and especially to Dr. Shari Olson and Dr. Doug Ferguson, both of whom shared their personal battles against cancer in this year’s inspiring video, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOW5Z6FCXvo

3. Learning Starts Day One–Starting This Fall!

The word is out…there’ll be a rude awakening this fall for students who attempt to enroll in classes once they’ve already begun….and that word is “no.” Starting Fall 2013, there will be no more late registration allowed. The data doesn’t lie–students who enter a class that’s already underway simply have a much steeper road to success.

So we need to send two messages to ALL SMCC students–register early, and show up to that first class! Watch your emails for fact sheets, marketing materials and other info, coming soon, and help us get the word out to our students. Remember—learning starts day one!

4. Meet the Deans, This Thursday!

It’s been a while since we had a Dean of Enrollment occupying that corner office in the SES Building, but that’s going to change soon. We have three excellent candidates for that position currently under consideration, and you will get a chance to meet them this Thursday afternoon, in a series of 30-minute public forums. On hand to answer your questions in the Student Union will be: Raphael Turner, 1:30 p.m.;Isaac Zuniga, 2:15 p.m.; and Vivian Miranda, 3:00 p.m. Be there, and ask the tough questions!
5.  Alicia Smith Hits the Road!

Early Childhood Faculty Alicia Smith has one busy spring and summer ahead of her. In June, she’ll be presenting at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development, to be held in San Francisco, California. Joining her will be four SMCC Early Childhood students: Suzette Davis, Virginia Palacios, Shawntel Hill and Charmaine Burton. But before that, then it’s off to Italy, this month, to participate in an International Study Group in Reggio Emilia, to collaborate on syllabus development. Good luck, Alicia, and viaggia sicuro!
6. Earth Day Video Screening Planned for April 22

SMCC has the opportunity to present an award-winning video this Earth Day, but we need a commitment from faculty willing to bring or send their students. Thin Ice: The Inside Story of Climate Science is the title of the film, which, according to producers, was created to provide viewers from all walks of the life the chance to see the astonishing range of human activity as well as scientific endeavour that is required to help us understand our changing climate. Location of the screening will depend on how much interest we get–so if you would like to help make this a student event, please contact Anne Luksza (x38034) or Cindy Odgers (x38029) and let them know.

7. South Mountain Seeking Stories!

South is, of course, the storytelling college, and this spring we are seeking students willing to share their own unique and personal South Mountain stories in a project we call “Life Stories: Weaving a Legacy of the Mountain.” Participants will work with our storytelling faculty to craft and record their stories, to be featured on our new website. Story sessions are coming up April 11, April 18 and April 27—interested students should contact Liz Warren (x38026) or Marilyn Torres (x38022).

(And as always, SMCC Marketing is looking for inspirational stories about 2013 graduates–send any and all tosouth@southmountaincc.edu.

8. A Big TY for SMCC Public Safety

Our college safety office, under the leadership of Commander Craig Emanuel, regularly earns praise from those they protect and service, and here’s part of a letter received from SMCC USDA Grant Coordinator Elysia Jennett recently in response to their extra efforts:
“I work in a small, old building at SMCC on the very edge of the campus and recently almost all of the other inhabitants moved out. Literally the same afternoon that my co-workers moved out, the campus PD came by to discuss my safety and make sure that I felt like I was going to be OK.  A campus police officer or campus security comes inside while I am here every day- often more than once a day!  I see them walk or drive by the building frequently.  One usually comes to lock up literally right when I am leaving in the evening.

“Also, I was recently in a car accident that has put me in a walker for quite a while.  They heard about the accident because it happened right outside SMCC and when I came back to work they welcomed me back and came to talk to me to see if I had any new security needs. I am just so impressed by the kindness of all of the cops and security, as well as the office staff!…You have an excellent bunch here at SMCC!”

9. SMCC Hosts Anti-Defamation League Film, Discussion

The South Mountain Student Life and Leadership Office recently hosted a presentation from the Anti-Defamation League’s “Many Faces of Hate” film series, a documentary entitled Training Rules.

OSL Director Buddy Cheekssent us this slide show documenting our students’ involvement in putting the event together…great job, all!

10. Spring Break Road Trip for Club Teach

SMCC Club Teach officersMarilyn AyalaAngie Gonzales,Roxanne BurquezTimothy Payne and Cristian Castro took advantage of a special invitation to visit the UCLA Teacher Education Program during Spring Break.  They received an invitation fromDr. Concepcion Valadez, UCLA Education Faculty, who met the students during her visit as a keynote speaker last March when SMCC hosted the Maricopa District’s Future Teachers Conference. Club Teach students toured the UCLA campus, visited with graduate students, were treated to lunch at the Faculty Club by the Dean of the School of Education and met with various individuals connected to the Teacher Education Program.
The students also got to visit the Museum of Tolerance and spend time in classrooms in at Felton Elementary School in the Lennox School District, where principal Scott Wilcox, teachers and students, hosted them.

1. Christopher Erran Honored by League for Innovation

"Excellence" is more than just a word at South…it’s one of our five core values, and something we strive for each and every day. That’s why we’re proud to announce that SMCC’s John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award for 2013, through the League for Innovation, was presented to Recruitment CoordinatorChristopher Erran this past March 13.

As Christopher’s nomination stated, "he is innovative in developing campus-wide programs for students and staff that lead South Mountain to be the campus of choice, a campus with a heart.  He inspires students to stretch outside their comfort zone so they can become the future leaders." Congratulations, Christopher!

2. Mark Your Calendar–Celebrate Student Arts at SMCC April 17

It’s not every day that we can combine the visual and performing arts into one special evening on campus, but Wednesday, April 17 will be such a day. Start your evening at the opening reception for SMCC’s Student Art Show in the Library Community Room, from 6 to 8 p.m. Art Faculty Wiley Wallace has assembled the best of our student art from this year, and there’ll be refreshments and live music as well.

Then from there, it’s on to the opening night of SMCC’s spring production, Unnecessary Farce. The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m., with performances the next three nights, as well as a Saturday matinee at 2:00 p.m. You can always stay on top of the arts at SMCC by calling our Arts Hotline, 602.243.8353.

3. Minority Male Summer Program SMCC Innovation of the Year

The numbers don’t lie–African American and Latino males remain significantly under-represented within Maricopa student populations, even at South, the most ethnically diverse college in the District. That’s what stimulated the creation of the Minority Male Summer Bridge program, in which male high school students of color were recruited from area high schools and given the opportunity to complete a math course and college success course within a four-week period last June. The results were extremely positive, and a result, the pilot program won SMCC’s 2013 Innovation of the Year award. Cougar kudos to all involved–pictured below (from left) Ruben Saenz, Armando Chavez, Arnold Torres, Dr. Terry Leyba Ruiz, Calvin DeVoll and Christopher Erran. And for a cool testimonial, listen to student Joseph May in this clip from Spring Convocation–click below and advance to the 16:45 mark:  http://tinyurl.com/b9a9saq

4. Keith Colter Captures Computer Commons Kudos

It’s our most alliterative accomplishment of the year….as the spotlight shines on Keith Colter of the Computer Commons. Here’s part of an email received by Commons management earlier this month: "I want you to know what a friendly, knowledgeable and helpful man Keith is. He has gone above and beyond in assisting me with the new Canvas application. Keith has been a helpful aide…making it so much easier for me getting back into school. Thank you for having people like Keith working at South Mountain Community College." And Keith was honored with a "Cougar Paw" for excellence by Interim LRC Director Suzanne Hipps. Way to go, Keith—keep those monitors humming.

5.  New Counselors Standing By for Student Advice!

Our Counseling, Health and Fitness Division may be the smallest of SMCC’s academic divisions, but they provide a vital service through offering personal and behavioral counseling to students in need. To aid in this effort, Division Chair Dr. Doug Ferguson announced this week the hiring of two new adjunct counselors: Evelyn Grier (pictured, right)and Troy Melandez. Welcome to Cougar Nation, Evelyn and Troy—glad to have you aboard!

6.  New Advisors Standing By for Student Counsel!

Not to be outdone, our Academic Advisement Office has ALSO brought two new Student Service Specialists on board. Sarah Tice (pictured, right)and Karina Chaidez started earlier this month. Karina previously worked for Everest University as a Student Services Specialist and Sarah comes to SMCC from Arizona State University, where she was an Academic Success Specialist and Academic Success Coordinator for the past five years. Welcome to South, Karina and Sarah!

7. Mike Burtch Completes “Foundations of Student Services”

Kudos to SMCC Advisor Mike Burtch for completion of the Foundations of Student Services Certificate of Completion from Estrella Mountain last year. The twelve-credit certificate provides professional preparation and enhances the professional development of student services employees.  Mike joins other SMCC staffers including Angie Glick and Debbie Nicholson who have completed this certification. Congrats, Mike—SMCC students will reap the rewards of your efforts!

8. "Miss Representation" Spotlights Women’s Empowerment

Does the media present limiting and disparaging portrayals of women and girls, making it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions….and for the average woman to feel POWERFUL herself?

That’s the question asked by Miss Representation, a documentary written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom which will be featured at SMCC next month. We will host a free screening and discussion on Thursday, April 11, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Library Community Room. We’re expecting a full house, so get there early!

9. What the Hail?

Nobody had the questionable taste to use that headline to describe the strange meteorological happenings in the Valley of the Sun this month, so we will. On not one but two separate occasions, we witnessed pea-sized chunks of ice pelting our otherwise sunny locale, and even South, which, nestled in the foothills of our namesake mountain, frequently misses such strange occurrences, caught a little bit of the white stuff a couple of weeks ago. We caught a few shots of the "Blizzard of ’13", for you to save and show the grandkids someday…

10. SMCC’s "In Conflict" Cast Featured at Vet’s Conference

South Mountain’s thespians took their show on the road this month, specifically to the Maricopa Veterans Dialogue Day, an event created to spotlight the academic and social needs of our student veterans. Theatre Faculty Julie Holston re-assembled the cast of "In Conflict", our fall production, to perform excerpts from the play, which focused on the first-hand experiences of Iraqi war veterans. Our student performers earned a standing ovation! The cast included, from left: Briana Horne, Joey Brown, Ishmael Moore, Damon Murff, Francisca Morales, Phillip Spencer, Vida De Jesus Lopez, Adriana Villa, Brittany Castro, and Benito Quinonez.

“Cougar Paws” Newest Way to Say Thanks

One of the many new ideas rolled out at this spring’s Convocation was SMCC’s new “Cougar Paw” employee recognition program. The idea, generated by our new Employee Development Council, is simple–here’s how it works. All employees at the Convocation lunch were provided with a set of five Cougar Paw cards, each representing a different SMCC value: Integrity, Excellence, Collaboration, Wellbeing and Community. When a colleague demonstrates one of these attributes, just pass the appropriate card along to them, as a way of recognizing their efforts.

Admin Assistant Stacey Wright used her “Collaboration” card to recognize Fiscal Tech II Kim Rainey this week for going the extra mile to help with a backlog of travel documents. Keep your cards handy, and when you’re the recipient of one of South Mountain’s frequent and not-so-random acts of kindness, pass along a Cougar Paw. And let the Top 10 know—we want to share the good news! Email us at south@southmountaincc.edu.

Dr. Proctor Goes to Mars–Sort Of

Well, actually she’s headed for the Utah desert—the closest thing to Mars that NASA could find. SMCC Geology Faculty Dr. Sian Proctor has been selected to participate in a project to study new forms of food and food preparation needed for long-term space travel. Sian explains: “I am going to the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah (pictured at right).”

She continues: “I will be in the habitat from Jan 12-26 with 5 other crew members. I am the Education Outreach Officer. I will be posting about the mission on the website: http://hi-seas.org/ and the Facebook Fan-page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hawaii-Space-Exploration-Analog-Simulation/281387055255817. I hope you will follow along. Take care and have a great semester!”

3.

SMCC Grad to Study Abroad in Viet Nam

Dr. Proctor isn’t the only one taking a road trip. Former SMCC TRIO student Leslie Padilla was one of 11 students (and the only community college applicant) to be accepted into Loyola University Chicago’s Vietnamese study abroad program this spring.

Pictured sending Leslie off on her Asian adventure were (from left, front row): Laura Smith, Leslie, and Janet Ortega; (back row) Derrick Washington, Dr. Rey Rivera, Dr. Osaro Ighodaro, and Ruben Saenz.

Leslie, a Biochemistry major, wrapped up her studies at SMCC this fall, and through TRIO Advisor Derrick Washington, learned about the opportunity. She applied for admission at Loyola, and was subsequently accepted into the program, which includes scholarship support for travel and tuition for her spring semester spent at the Loyola Vietnam Center in Ho Chi Minh City. She also got to visit with Arizona State Representative Robert Meza, who learned of her accomplishment and invited her to the capitol for a visit. Congratulations, Leslie, and chúc may mắn!

Cougar Cafe Upgrades Earn NextStep Award for SMCC

The recent remodeling of the SMCC Cougar Cafe, including the new automated kiosk ordering system, caught the attention of Nextep, the company that furnishes the kiosks, who bestowed an award on SMCC Fiscal Services Manager Tom Nicol and Cafe Manager Cindy Erickson (pictured here with VP Janet Ortega) for their work in implementing th system. If you haven’t tried the new automated ordering system yet, check it out—it’s quicker and easier than a drive-thru, with no exhaust fumes…

Bye-Bye Blackboard…Time for a Fresh Canvas

By now, hopefully most of you are aware that Maricopa is discontinuing its use of Blackboard as our Learning Management System, and shifting over to Canvas. By this fall, the transition will be complete–no more Blackboard. So if you still haven’t taken the time to learn about the new system, we strongly advise you do–Patricia Herrera in the TLC is offering regular classes and workshops on Canvas, to get you ready for the shift. Those who have started using it are saying a lot of good things….check it out. Contact Patricia at x55687 for the upcoming schedule of classes.

SMCC Parades Through Laveen, February 2

How to you plan on celebrating Groundhog’s Day this year? Doing the same thing you do every Groundhog’s Day, over and over and over? Break out of the rut, and this year, join our plucky band of South Mountain students and staff at the Laveen Community Parade, Saturday, February 2. The college’s Cougar Van will be there, and our Cougar Ambassadors will take to the street at 11:00 a.m., marching along Dobbins Road from 43rd to 51st Avenues. Come join the team, and help spread the word about SMCC to all our potential students out west!

SMCC Hoops Star Enjoys NCAA Success

Mike CraigIf you caught any of the Men’s Basketball games last season, you’ll remember the very talented Mike Craig, who led the team in just about every statistic and wound up being named Conference Player of the Year. Mike’s currently playing at Southern Mississippi for the Golden Eagles, helping lead them to a 12-4 record out of the gate, currently first in Conference USA, and is second on the team in points (10.4), rebounds (5.8) and assists (2.5). Here’s a story from the Arizona Daily Star from last December, when the team visited the U of A: http://tinyurl.com/cj8efk5

One Name, One Password: “Single Identity” Access is Here

Don’t be this guy! We mentioned it last month, but it bears repeating — we’ve changed the way to sign on to any classroom or general use computer at SMCC—all you need to do is use your MEID and password. The new “Single Identity” system replaces our old “Instructor” user name and general use password. It’s all part of an ongoing effort to simplify access to Maricopa technology resources. We’ve also made changes to our WiFi access—read more about it here:

College, Library to Feature African Storytelling

AFRICAN STORYTELLINGSouth Mountain is gearing up for Black History Month in February, and since we’re the Storytelling College,” we’ve already got two storytelling events on the calendar. First up will be a session hosted at the South Mountain Community Library on January 30 at 7 p.m., “An Evening of African Storytelling,” featuring presenters from the SMCC Storytelling Institute. Then, coming to the PAC on February 14 and 15 will be our fourth annual presentation of “Return to the African Village,” coordinated by Marilyn Torres and featuring storytelling, music and dance. Both events are free, so bring your friends, family, and the whole neighborhood!

An SMCC Student Success Story

TRIO Director Ruben Saenz passed along this letter from Maria Villamar, a former student, that we had to share—one of the many great success stories we hear everyday from the many students we’ve helped along the way…

Dear Mr. Saenz,

It is my pleasure to announce my graduation on December 21, 2012 from Arizona State University. I am graduating as an undergraduate student in the Speech and Hearing Science department. I would like to take this moment to thank the staff at TRIO. The TRIO department provided me with many great teaching tools and tutoring services while being a student at South Mountain Community College. The most significant advice from a TRIO counselor was to apply for a Dorrance Scholarship. The TRIO staff helped me through the process of the application. I was one of the first applicants to apply during the first year offered at SMCC.

Fortunately, I was selected. Because of that, I was able to pursue my dream of a college education. I completed my Associate of Arts degree at SMCC and transferred to ASU in January 2010. While attending classes at ASU, ASU gave me the opportunity to work a few months in the Speech and Hearing Research Lab as a bilingual assessor. The workshops offered by the TRIO program prepared me for the journey of what would be my college experience at ASU. It all began with a TRIO staff member’s advice…

The Dorrance Scholarship paid for my education at SMCC and at ASU. Now I can teach my daughters that we can all succeed in life by making only a small sacrifice to persist in college and not to give up on your dreams. I learned to be an achiever and not a loser. Thank you, TRIO, for all your support and trainings during my college experience at SMCC.

Sincerely,

Maria R. Villamar

1. Packed PAC Celebrates 25th “Messiah”

A full-house was on hand December 1 as South Mountain’s annual presentation of “Highlights from Handel’s Messiah” celebrated its silver anniversary. It was, from all accounts, the best performance ever, and virtually all in attendance joined Dr. Jerome Garrison, the soloists, choir and orchestra afterward for cake in the PAC Amphitheatre. One attendee, Kathryn Howard, took time to write the following note to Dr. Garrison following the performance:”I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Handel’s Messiah at SMCC on Saturday evening and I was so deeply impressed by the beauty of the music the orchestra and choir performed under your direction.  It was for me an exalting experience that is still with me – I was uplifted from beginning to end.  I brought several friends with me and they concurred.  After hearing your comments at the end and reflecting on how long some of you had been performing together the reverence for the music that was conveyed made sense.

“This was the first time for me to attend, and I will do my best to never miss another one of these events!  Thanks to you and all for offering this lovely evening.”

2. Six Sigma White Belts Empower SMCC’ers27 SMCC employees and students received their Six Sigma White Belts at a presentation ceremony December 5. The Lean Six Sigma curriculum provides tools and techniques to increase workplace efficiency and productivity, helping us toward our institutional goals of continuous improvement and innovation. As in the martial arts, the White Belt signifies a beginner level understanding of the Six Sigma philosophy. Training will soon be made available to all college employees—watch for announcements this spring!
3. “Fuel for Finals” Facilitates Finishing in Fine Fashion

We hope there are more “F’s” in that headline than there are on campus this week, as our students embark on their fall finals. The Student Life Office and Learning Center, with help from the Inter-Club Council, have teamed up to get everyone off to a good start Monday through Thursday, with FREE brain food and refreshments. The goodies are being served up between 9 and 11 a.m. on the LRC Patio, and are available to ALL students, so spread the word!
4. Celebrate 12-12-12 With Dozens of Delectable Delights

Don’t forget—this Wednesday is the only Triple-12 day of the century, so come and celebrate at SMCC’s annual Holiday Luncheon. All employees are invited to head for the Student Union between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. for a mind-boggling array of sides, salads and desserts contributed by your culinary-minded colleagues, along with ham, turkey and mashed potatoes. Join us as we celebrate the end of another great year at South Mountain in style!

RSVP’d yet? If not, go here: http://tiny.cc/gcvuow

5. Felice Weiner Honored as a Pearson’s “One Professor”

Have you heard about Pearson’s “One Professor” program? Students from across the country are encouraged to make videos and submit them to the Pearson website, about the “One Professor” whose made a difference in their lives…instructors who “ignite our passions and enrich our lives every day.” SMCC student Amber Salas submitted a video for Math Faculty Felice Weiner, and here it is….kudos to both!

6. Civic Engagement Team Trains Student Moderators The Civic Engagement team of the SMCC President’s Community Advisory Council has been hard at work all fall developing new ways to engage our students in community endeavors. Last Friday,Alberto Olivas from the Maricopa Center for Civic Engagement provided training for 18 of our students, faculty, and one community member to become Moderators at an upcoming series of Student and Community Forums. The training took place at The Farm, courtesy of owners and college supporters Pat Cristofoloand Greg Brownell. Watch for these forums on campus starting in 2013!

7. Thefts on Campus on the Upswing—Be Aware!

The SMCC Public Safety Office has reported that this fall has seen a greater number of thefts on campus than normal, both of college and private property. (Letters from building signage seems to be particularly popular.) As we wind down the semester, don’t become any less vigilant—keep your eyes open and please report ANY suspicious behavior to the Safety Office, by calling x38100.
8. “Single Identity” Computer Access Starts December 14

It’s definitely news when technology systems get simpler—and that’s what’s happening with the Maricopa District’s new“Single Identity” initiative. Basically, it all boils down to students and employees having a single sign-on—your MEID and password—to access any general use college computer. Same goes for our campus Wi-Fi system. It goes into effect this Friday, December 14—so bookmark this link for all the details, and contact the SMCC Help Desk at x38324 for any questions.http://smccvoice.southmountaincc.edu/index.php/single-identity/
9. Cate McNamara Hits The Bricks in VegasSMCC Library Faculty Cate McNamara (right) was one of the thundering herd of 22,000 runners in the photo on the far right, running in the Zappos.com Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas 1/2 Marathon last month.

Proceeds went to benefit the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. Way to go, Cate!

10. SMCC Student Huy Mai Places 14th in National Competition

SMCC Cisco Faculty Tom Polliardreports on a great achievement by one of our CIS students:

“Every year Cisco holds its annual NetRiders competition, where students are able to showcase their computer networking skills.  South Mountain’s Cisco Academy was represented by Huy (Henry) Mai. Although Henry is just finishing up his second of four CCNA classes, he ranked number one in the state of Arizona & 14th out of an initial pool of over 940 competitors from Canada and the United States.  Many of Henry’s competitors had finished all four of the CCNA courses and some are enrolled in the more advanced CCNP courses.  Henry’s vast intellectual horsepower, coupled with his passion for networking, will serve him well as he pursues a degree in Cisco Network Security here at South Mountain.”

A Salute to the SMCC Maintenance Crew

It happens all the time, but lately we’ve encountered more visitors than usual commenting on the beauty of our campus. And because it’s something we tend to take for granted, this week we wanted to single out the work of SMCC’s groundskeepers and custodians, who work day in and day out to keep South Mountain looking great. As of late, a number of staffers have even been doing double-duty because of some vacant positions. So thanks to Bear Holmes, Dave Bannenberg and the whole Facilities and Maintenance Department for a job well done!

Diversity Day Yields A Diverse Array

DiverseSouth Mountain is far and away the most culturally diverse campus out of all the Maricopa Community Colleges. That’s why twice a year, we take a few days to celebrate the uniquely enriching multicultural blend of humanity represented here. This year’s Diversity Awareness Days happened last week, and had the LRC Patio rocking. (There was also some killer neckwear happening.)

Thanks to Asha Dey for coordinating, and watch for our Spring Diversity Awareness Days coming in late April.

3.

SMCC Honors Showcase This Wednesday

PTKIt’s all too easy for us to get stuck in our offices, buried in work, and forget the reason we’re all here—teaching and learning. But every semester we have some great opportunities to show off our students’ efforts in the classroom, and the Honors Showcase is always one of the most inspiring. The Fall showcase is set for thisWednesday, December 5, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Library Community Room.

Honors Coordinator Nancy Deegan invites everyone to come and see the amazing work produced this semester by our honors students. Come check out the poster displays and PowerPoints, and prepare to be impressed!

Our employee groups will be contributing DOZENS of sides, salads and sweets, while the President’s Team provides the entrees. Catch Greg B’s Annual Catfish Fry, December 21catfish

The Salt River isn’t really known as a good source of catfish—actually, the Salt River isn’t really even known as a good source of WATER. But that doesn’t stopGreg Brownell, longtime SMCC supporter and member of our President’s Community Advisory Council, from putting on one of the community’s tastiest events every year. "Greg’s 12th Annual Catfish Fry" takes place Friday night, December 21, starting at 6 p.m. up at the American Legion Hall, on Broadway just east of 16th Street.

There's An App For ThatSMCC STEP Students Step Into the BlogosphereSouth Mountain alums are showing up everywhere these days….even in iTunes. CIS Faculty Stephen Hustedde shared this note from one of his former students, Eddie Islas, whose consumer spending app is now for sale online:

Mr H,

My name is Eduardo Islas (Eddie). I was in your CIS162AD C# class last spring. I just wanted to let you know I developed an iOS app for the iPhone, and it went live in the app store today.  I wanted to say thank you for what you taught me in your class….I couldn’t have done this without the knowledge I learned in your class. Take a look when you’ve got a chance. I built the app, the UI design, and the website by myself. I actually used responsive web design to build the site—once again, thank you!!

1. SMCC Grad Featured in AZ Republic Holiday CampaignCandiceIf you’re a regular reader of the SundayArizona Republic, you probably saw a familiar face in the November 11 edition. SMCC grad and former Cougar Ambassador Candice Johnson was featured in that day’s “Season for Sharing” story, which highlights Valley non-profit organizations (such as Helping Hands for Single Moms, with whom Candice worked) in need of holiday time support.

Candice’s inspirational story and aspirations for her future typify the South Mountain success stories we see everyday–she is no doubt headed for great things. You can read all about it here:

Holiday Donation Drives in Full SwingThe holiday season around South Mountain is synonymous with giving, and this year is no exception. The college works closely with numerous local charities each year to ensure that those in need receive all the help we can give.

This year, two such efforts are already underway—the Kids Coats for a Causecampaign, in which new and used coats and other clothing items are sought for area youngsters; and the Adopt an Angelprogram, organized by our Club Teach students, which seeks donations for children at the Orfanato Nino Jesus orphanage.

Mike Pops is our campus intact for Coats (x38154) and Marilyn Ayala can provide the Angels info (x55771).

“Engineering Your Future” Hits Campus TodayIf you find yourself strolling across the North Green this morning, you may have to duck flying ping pong balls. It’s not a Student Life tournament—it’s South Mountain’s Engineering students showing off their catapult skills. The catapult contest, along with the popular robot maze (below) is just one of the activities taking place in Dr. Tim Frank’s “Engineering Your Future” event, a lively way of sharing career opportunities in the field of engineering with potential students. The fun starts at 11 a.m. and lasts until 1:30….it all happens in the Student Union and Mandala.

Register for Valley del Sol Hispanic Leadership InstituteValley del SolOne of SMCC’s most productive partnerships has been with Valle del Sol, a non-profit organization created to assist individuals and families within our community. We’ve played host to their African-American Leadership Institute this fall, and they are now taking applications for their annual Hispanic Leadership Institute. It was created to promote the individual development of Hispanics for increased participation in community leadership roles. The next session February 5, but deadline to register is December 5. To get more information or register, contact Angela Florezat 602.258.6797, x527.

Relay Repeats—SMCC Hosts 2nd Walk-a-thon March 23-24Relay for LifeThe first one turned out so nice, we’re doing it twice—South Mountain will host its second annual “Relay for Life” rally for the American Cancer Society next spring on March 23 and 24. The event is a 12-hour all night marathon walk held here on our main campus, during which funds are raised in the form of pledges collected by area walk teams. Last year’s event was a huge success, and preparations for this year’s Relay begin this week, with a kick-off event this Wednesday night, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. For more details, contact Sianna Kent (x55676) orMonica Huerta (x38171).

7.
Spirit Week Rocks and Rolls the CampusNerd DaySouth Mountain’s fall spirit week brought out the best in many college employees, as they took part in such events as Burgers and Basketball, Hawaiian Day, Hippie Day, and, as vividly depicted in this photo, Nerd and/or Crazy Hair Day. Kathie HawkinsAnne Luszka and Lorrie Shelton gave it their best shot, demonstrating the finer points of both types of “style.”

SMCC STEP Students Step Into the BlogosphereAll too often, the South Mountain STEP program is one of our best-kept secrets. But it shouldn’t be that way—the student support programs operating under the direction ofRuben Saenz’s STEP Office have helped hundreds of SMCC students navigate their way through SMCC and beyond. You can share in their experiences via the new STEP blog—check out this installment, written by STEP student Amber Salas (that’s her, second from the left.) It includes their recent visits to the University of Arizona and Biosphere II. If your a Facebooker, bookmark their blogspot for future visits…there’s much more to come!

1.    iStartSmart—It’s Working!iStartSmart

SMCC, like many other colleges across the nation, has worked diligently to increase its efforts in support of student retention and persistence in recent years, and chief among these has been the introduction and expansion of our iStartSmart new student experience. And we’re pleased to report that the numbers are showing improvement. To date, more than 2,000 students have participated in the program, and we are now serving 85% of students who meet the criteria for inclusion—this year we more than doubled the size of our fall cohort.
But is it working? The numbers say “yes.” In the past three years, the percent of iStartSmart students successfully completing all of their courses with a C or better has increased by 11% to about 45% of the students in the cohort. And 86% of the students from the most recent Fall iSS cohort enrolled in the second semester, as compared to the average of 50% for all SMCC students. Fall-to-Fall persistence rates for cohort students are also well above average, with 51% of students persisting to the third semester as compared to 29% of the general student population. Bottom line—we are making significant progress! Thanks to ALL faculty and staff who have worked together toward our ultimate goal of student success and completion.

The GSA of the South Mountain region are currently involved in a whole host of community activities, and invite the SMCC family to come and learn about what they’re doing. Find out more at a special Brown Bag this week, Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in the Library Community Room. Watch Those Words—Plagiarism Workshop Nov. 19 at SMCL

Plagiarism WorkshopWith the wealth of information available to students with the click of a mouse, “borrowing” the words and ideas of others has never been easier. That’s why the Library has offered multiple workshops on plagiarism this fall, and one more is coming up Monday, Nov. 19 from 3 to 4 p.m. in L-235. As an added incentive, one lucky attendee will win a $15 Cougar Cafe gift card….so as we enter the run-up to final exams, please encourage (maybe as extra credit?) your students to attend. Questions? Contact Stephanie Allen at x55887.

Point, Touch, Slide and Eat–Cougar Cafe Kiosks Make Eating on Campus a Snap!

Cougar CafeIf you’ve ever ordered a burger from the SMCC Cougar Cafe for lunch on a busy day, you’ve no doubt experienced the logjam around the grill—it can get confusing, and you can even lose your lunch—(no, not like that)—in the process. Well, worry no more—with two new electronic kiosks now in place, you can place your order with the touch of a screen, pay with a card, and then pick up your food when your order number is called. Now’s the time to check out our great menu and expanded seating area—lunch on campus is better (and easier) than ever!

Travis May a Winner at Storytelling Throwdown

When it comes to storytelling, the ancient Greeks and Romans were masters of the art. That’s what led the SMCC Storytelling Institute to create the “Greek and Roman Myth Throwdown” on Nov. 2, an open competition for students to tell three-minute versions of 26 Greek and Roman myths (literally from A to Z). The winners then were invited to come back at last Monday night’s “Myth Informed” and tell expanded versions of their tales. Among the winners—SMCC’s own tech team member and current storytelling student Travis May, who wowed the crowd with his unique interpretation of “The Furies.”  Donning the official “cheesy faux laurel leaf crowns” below are your eight winners: Zach Judd, Laura Rutherford, Kyle Mitchell, Cassie Cushing, Jarvis Hurts, Travis, and James Ashcroft. Banu Silbahar (not pictured) was the eighth winner.
